The Invention of Canned Food

In 1795, Napoleon Bonaparte announced he would give 1000 Franks to the person who found a method to keep food healthy for a long time, for his army and navy. Confectionery producer French Nicolas Appert, a former chef; was already working on a storage, other than traditional methods such as drying, smoking and salting. In 1809, when Appert heard the news, he developed the canning technique with glass jars after long trials.
